Form 16 is a certificate issued by your employer that shows the details of the salary you earned during a financial year and the tax deducted at source (TDS) on it. Form 16 has two parts: Part A and Part B. How to download Form 16 online?




If you have not received Form 16 from your employer or if you have lost it, you can download it online from the TRACES portal of the Income Tax Department. TRACES stands for TDS Reconciliation Analysis and Correction Enabling System. It is a web-based application that enables deductors, deductees, and taxpayers to view and manage their TDS related information online.


To download Form 16 online, you need to follow these steps:


Visit the TRACES portal at


  • Login by entering your User ID, Password, PAN, and captcha code.



  • After logging in, click on the 'Downloads' tab and select 'Form 16'.



  • Enter the details such as financial year, quarter, form type, PAN of deductor, TAN of deductor, etc. and click on 'Go'.



  • Select the relevant record from the list of available records and click on 'Download'.



  • You will receive a zip file containing Part A and Part B of Form 16 in PDF format. You need to enter a password to open the file. The password is your PAN followed by your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format.



  • Review the details and verify the tax computation. If there is any tax payable, you need to pay it online using the 'e-Pay Tax' option. If there is any refund due, you need to provide your bank account details.



  • Submit the ITR form by clicking on the 'Submit' button. You will receive an acknowledgment number and a verification code on your registered email ID and mobile number.



  • Verify your ITR by using any of the available methods, such as Aadhaar OTP, net banking, bank account, demat account, etc. You can also download the ITR-V form and send it by post to the Centralized Processing Center (CPC) of the Income Tax Department.

How to verify and rectify Form 16?




It is very important to verify and rectify Form 16 before using it for filing your income tax return. If your Form 16 is incorrect or incomplete, it may lead to mismatch in your TDS credit, tax liability, refund claim, etc. It may also result in notices or penalties from the Income Tax Department.


To verify and rectify Form 16, you need to follow these steps:


  • Compare Part A of Form 16 with Form 26AS. Form 26AS is a consolidated annual tax statement that shows all the TDS deducted and deposited on your behalf by various deductors. You can download Form 26AS from the TRACES portal or from your net banking account. You need to check whether the TAN, PAN, name, address, TDS amount, etc. of your employer are matching with Form 26AS. If there is any discrepancy, you need to inform your employer and request them to correct it.



  • Compare Part B of Form 16 with your payslips and bank statements. You need to check whether the salary components, allowances, deductions, exemptions, taxable income, etc. are correctly reflected in Part B of Form 16. If there is any error or omission, you need to inform your employer and request them to rectify it.
